Let me direct you to a post I made three years ago, describing a mythical iSight Express and iSight Extreme tandem. Maybe with the WiFi-is-ubiquitous philosophy of the iPod touch, we might see something like this soonish.

I like the notion of a camera, I just don't like sticking it in a laptop or other piece of hardware that makes it difficult to manipulate. A laptop makes a fairly unwieldy vidcam, but then I guess Apple wants to kick you over to Canon or Sony if you want to do anything other than video chats.

Mark, what is it you don't like about the camera? Too George Orwell?

I have Grandmas who will soon be upgrading their Macs and will get built-in iSights, with which they will want to see their grandchildren. One of them might want a separate display, which would put the kibosh on my plans.

Thanks for the offer of an iSight, but I, too, have two external iSights just hanging around, as my computers were built before email, and I use them occasionally (what I don't have are enough ports, as it turns out, to have it plugged in all the time).

I'm an integrator, which goes to Denny's comment. I loved the ADC, too, because it was one, beautiful, simple cable. That's why I like the built-in cameras.

It's too bad because the ADC connection was awesome! If nothing else, there should be an industry standard for a cable that carries more than the video signal.

Tecnically awesome I should say. It's not so cool dealing with the other issues of a proprietary connection.

I hope they never, ever do that. I don't like having the camera built in to my MacBook.

I have a spare iSight sitting around that I'm prepared to make you an insanely good deal on, if you're interested. Mail or IM me.
